Queen of the Universe Day Center (QUDC) in Levittown will be renamed Archangels’ Academy, School of Special Education, and relocated to Immaculate Conception B.V.M. Parish School, also in Levittown, in September.

QUDC, a school for 5-to-16-year-olds who have cognitive disabilities, are developmentally delayed or brain-damaged, is presently located on the premises of Queen of the Universe Parish School. The distance between the present and future sites is less than one mile.

“How blessed we are to have Mary, the Immaculate Conception and Mother of Jesus, to intercede for us and to have Michael, Gabriel and Raphael to watch over us as we continue in our mission to serve God’s special children,” said Ruth Andruskevich, principal of QUDC.

The new name and location, she said, will clarify the school’s identity and mission, and enhance the school’s ability to meet the educational and spiritual needs of the children.

Sharon Quay, the Archdiocese’s assistant superintendent for special education, noted that the present name and site had caused some confusion through the years. Some parents who came across the name Queen of the Universe Day Center mistakenly assumed it was a daycare center, while others confused it with Queen of the Universe elementary school.

The new site will also provide improved logistics for the youngsters. At Immaculate Conception B.V.M., Archangels’ Academy will be housed on the first floor of the school building.

The name and location change, part of a strategic plan for the school, were approved in January.

Andruskevich also acknowledged the 25 successful years the school has celebrated on the premises of Queen of the Universe parish and school.

“We give thanks to God for all that has been and for the adventure, challenge and surprises to come,” she said.
